Furniture. What would we do without it? Sit on the floor most likely. Whoever invented furniture did mankind a great service. And it has so many uses.

For starters, there's the furniture we use for our work. There are more kinds of furniture for work purposes than we probably need. But then again, maybe we do.

Take your standard desk. Well, maybe not so standard. There are many kinds of desks. Desks with drawers, desks without drawers, which are primarily made simply to keep stuff on. What kind of stuff? All kinds. Printers, computers, fax machines, telephones, and the list goes on and on. Of course desks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There are rectangular desks, square desks, oval or circular desks which are used mostly for those company meetings. There are big desks that can span half a room and small desks that can fit in the corner. Then of course your have your L shaped desks so that you and a co worker can work together without getting in each other's way.

Of course no office furniture would be complete without chairs. There are plenty of those to choose from as well, some more comfortable than others. You've got your hard chairs with absolutely NO padding whatsoever. Basically they're a couple of legs, hard wooden seat and hard wooden back. Kind of like the chairs your school teacher would put you in and stick you in a corner with when you were bad. But then there are the really NICE office chairs. You know the ones I mean. They have steel tripod supports, leather seat and back, swivel around and so comfortable you could fall asleep in them. Somewhere in between you have your felt foam seat chairs with felt foam backs. They're not as comfortable but you can sit in them for an 8 hour day.

Then you have your carts. These are mostly used for your Mr. Coffee that sits in the corner of the room so that you can get your caffeine fix when you need it. No office would be complete without a cart of some kind. The good thing about them is that they're small enough not to get in the way and big enough to do the job.

Then of course there are the filing cabinets. Have you ever seen an office that didn't have a filing cabinet? These also come in all shapes and sizes. There are the long cabinets usually used for storing irregularly shaped and large documents. Then there are your standard filing cabinets for storing manila folders. Most of these come with special racks inside so you can hang your documents up and not have to worry about them falling all over the place.

Yes, there is a ton of office furniture to choose from and based on the kind of office you have and the kind of decor you want to display to your workers will determine to a great extent what kind of furniture you get.

Awesome, I got this for my 5 year old son I had the original and thought how much fun I'd had and just knew he would too. I infact couldn't figure out what I wanted for christmas so asked my wife for one. Now with the Super soaker stile cannon shoots over 20 feet has got to be one of the best ideas, yet. Yes, I'm 34 and weigh in at about 180 after reading another review where a 31 year old 5'11 can ride why can't I. And I do. It was the best Christmas thus far I got the WOW!!! from my son and we had a blast Xmas day riding and shoot each other with the water guns. If you are wanting to ride put a pillow between seat and tank works perfect. Otherwise it is very awkward to ride. Oh yeah hold on!!, with the new rubber super grip tire it goes as fast as you can peddle. Putting them together can be a little irratating put if you some what mechanically inclined not to bad. Have fun and might want to suit your kid up in some safty equipment.

Customer Review: Incredible resource but lacks some of the how-to

This thick little book is filled with dimensional drawings of all kinds of furniture, including the very high-end furniture and some historical pieces. The author goes into great detail about every type of joint with some practical commentary on the pros and cons of each type. There are also detailed sections on legs and feet, table types, and drawer construction.

My only letdown, as an amateur furniture hobbyist, is that there is little or no talk about tool usage and how to make some of these pieces. The author favored information about origins, history, and aesthetics. However, the book makes up for this with its great perspective drawings on every page, complete with dimensions and names for each component. This will be a great resource down the road when I need to know how to construct a unique joint or when I just want to see something new to inspire me.

I bought this book because I have difficulty in two areas. One is in visualizing the construction details for a design I've sketched out. The other is in deciding what joints will be most appropriate. This book covers those two topics extremely well. In fact, better than any other book in my library.

The text is very well written. He says what he has to say in a concise and easy to read way.

I think it was written for intermediate and advanced level woodworkers, but I see a lot that would be of great value to beginners who want to try their hand at something a little more challenging.

Customer Review: Looks nice. Bad cable management.

Installation was fairly easy. However, installation instructions were not very clear. Had to figure out a couple steps, as the example images were either not clearly demonstrated or missing.

The unit looks nice. You have a choice of where to mount the shelves on the unit, which is nice. The configuration that I decided on was good for my setup, but you can clearly see the seperation of the cable management covers. Looks a bit on the cheap side because of this.

The functionality and easy of use of the cable management system is poor. This was clearly lacking in good design. I suggest that you tightly tie two channels of wire before attempting to place the covers. I did not do this during the initial installation. Then, I had to run an additional wire a couple weeks later. Taking the covers off was a careful operation, and more difficult than expected. And, the process ended up stripping a power cord from removing a cover. Not happy about that. That's when I devised a better plan to tightly tie two channels before re-attaching the covers the second time around.

Bottom line: In hindsight, I should have searched more diligently and paid a few more dollars for a better unit.

If you need a desk lamp, don't think buying an expensive one will necessarily be better. This one is sufficient--the price is great, if you have money strains. I wanted a swing arm, architect-like lamp so I was going to get one of the expensive ones but this one is fine. This has to be the most beautiful book in the series of Arts & Crafts style shop drawings from Robert Lang, and I have them all. I have to say, almost every piece in this book is one where you have to decide that you are going to devote between 6 months and a year of your life to making. I have not yet made this committment, but I already see how reading this book has influenced some of the details on my other work. Gorgeous color plates of these masterpieces are included and everything is printed on archival quality glossy paper. Drawings are clear and descriptive text is concise and well written. Overall I recommend this to any student of Greene and Green (and Peter and John Hall, the craftsmen who actually built most of these pieces for them!)

There are many businesses out there which rent furniture by the month. You need a couch? Rent one for only $40 per month. Need a lamp? You can get one for $12 a month. Now,
let's see, in one year you would have paid $480 to use the couch and you wouldn't own it. The lamp would have cost you $144 and it's the same situation ~ at the end of your lease, you still own nothing.

Most of us would think it foolish to rent furniture. But, that isn't always the case. There are situations where renting may be the best option. Consider these scenarios:

* Your company transfers you to a new location but the rest of your family is staying in your present home until the school year ends and that's 4 months away. You buy a house and live in it until your family arrives. Do you go out and buy new furniture or do you rent a few necessities in the meantime?

* Right after you get married, you move into a new home. You and your spouse haven't decided how you
want to decorate your home. Do you rush your decisions or do you rent furniture until you find the style that will please you both?

* You graduate from college and accept a position in an unfamiliar city. You find an apartment that has everything you want, except furniture. You can't afford to go out and purchase the items you'll need right away. What do you do?

If you find yourself in any of these situations, renting all or part of your furniture may be a viable option. The thing you have to keep in mind is that it's never a long-term solution. From the figures in the first paragraph, you can see how expensive renting is over the long haul.

However, when you find yourself without furniture, short term rental may be your best option. If you don't have the cash or credit to purchase what you need, or if you only plan to be without furniture for a little while, short-term rental may be the best solution.

Most furniture rental companies offer several options from which to choose. Most of them also offer packages in
different price ranges, depending on the style and quality of the furniture you require.

* The bedroom package usually includes a double or queen-size bed, night stand and lamp, and 1 chest.

* A living room package provides a couch, end table and lamp, cocktail table, and a chair.

* A dining room package includes a table and 4 chairs.

* A complete home package includes all of the above.

* You can also rent any accessories you may need, including cookware and china, rugs, additional lamps, TV's, stereos, etc.

As long as you rent only what you need and do so for as short a time as possible, furniture rental may be the solution you need. But, don't forget to calculate the cost of your rent or mortgage along with the cost of your furniture rental before you decide which package to choose.

If money is an issue, one question you need to ask yourself is this: do you really need the most expensive package or can you get by with the more generic and economical choice for 2 or 3 or 4 months? Unless you plan to do a lot of business entertaining, the answer is obvious.

In short, furniture rental can be an economically sound solution to your problem, if you use your common sense and don't get in over your head. It beats sleeping on the floor any day!

Protect your investment, from time to time you will need to wax your furniture. This should be done using a soft cloth and bees wax. You should then allow some time before buffing off using a new soft cloth. Always buff in the direction of the grain.

Any food or drink spills should be wiped off immediately with a dry cloth. If afterwards the wood is marked, gently rub down with extra fine wire wool in the direction of the grain. Once the marking is cleared you will need to wax over.

Hot or cold dishes should not be placed directly on to the surface.

We purchased the Jumperoo for my 7 month old son. A friend of us had it and we liked the design, the quality of the plastic and toys. My son loves the Jumperoo. It took him a couple of hours to get the hand. He now spends 1-2 hours a day playing in it, freeing my wife to do other things in the house. The different materials, colors and sounds are really stimulating. He plays and jumps all the time. We've had the jumperoo for 3 weeks and my son is not getting tired it.

The only inconvenience of this model is that it is bulky even when disassembled.

What to Look For When Choosing Baby Furniture

If you're a new parent, be aware that you baby will probably spend more time in the nursery than anywhere else. So you do need to make it absolutely safe abd comfortable. Make it attractive and well organized too.

To get started, decide which furniture you need. These include: cribs, crib mattresses, bassinets, cradles, Moses baskets and changing tables.

Cribs

Your child will sleep in a crib until it's time to move into a real bed (typically between the ages of 2 and 3). So choose sturdy crib that you can use every day for at least two years. New cribs sold in the United States (including all cribs sold in our Store) comply with modern safety standards. The crib should have a railing that lowers, so you can pick up your baby easily; some models have railings that lower on both sides. You'll spend $200 to $400 for a safe, well-made crib. Spending more usually buys you finer woods and more intricate designs.

Crib Mattresses

To sleep soundly and safely, babies require firm support. Consider cost, comfort, and sturdiness, as your child will probably sleep in his crib for up to three years. The first choice you'll have to make is between a foam mattress and an innerspring mattress. Be prepared to pay $60 to $100 for a foam crib mattress, and up to $140 for an innerspring crib mattress.

Bassinets, Cradles and Moses Baskets

A bassinet, cradle, or Moses basket can be a convenient and comfortable sleeping place for your baby during the first few months. Your baby may feel more at ease in the smaller, cozier space than in a crib. Plus you can carry these small portable baby beds from room to room, letting you keep a close watch on your sleeping baby. Your bassinet should have a firm mattress that fits snugly without any space around the edges.

Changing Tables

To change baby's diapers conveniently, you'll definitely need a comfortable place to do it. A changing table is most suitable for this. If you decide to invest in a changing table, there are plenty of well-designed, practical, and attractive ones to choose from. And as your baby grows, a special table can offer more security, with railings and special straps to help hold your wriggling child in place. Make sure there are safety straps to help secure your baby. If your changing table doesn't have safety straps, you should add them.

Shopping for baby furniture can be challenging. With this guide, hopefully your task is now a little simpler!

I have BOTH Fisher price Ocean Wonder + Lil' Laugh & Learn Mobile

Ocean wonder doesn't fit my Crib very well, so I buy Lil' Laugh & Learn months later. LLL Mobile fit my Crib perfectly, the Clamp Crib adaptor are much wider to fit most crib, Ocean wonder doesn't fit and My husband "cut" part of the Crib Adaptor and tried to fit it on the crib.

OW mobile music only last for around 8 minutes, so I have to come back to the room every 8 mins. This Lil' Laugh & Learn mobile music last for 20 mins, so I can sleep while the baby is entertained, she usually fall asleep in 20 mins (or maybe another 20 mins)

However, the light(moon)on the LLL mobile base only last 2 mins, if you use it in a dark bedroom, the baby probably can't see the flying toy, baby can only see the projection light on the wall.

OW has light dome which light can stay as long as the moble is ON(8 mins), so your baby can see the flying toy in the dark room

OW projection light are much more beautiful & BRIGHTER, the Lil' Laugh & Learn is dim and yellow

I bought the OW last year, before baby born while LLL is not availabe on the market,and got the LLL mobile when she is 2 months old. Now, she is very excit when she sleep underneath the LLL mobile. I put the OW on the desk and use it when she is awake, but it seems she like the toy flying "above" her, not "beside" her.

I am so glad to have found that this item is still for sale. I had been using it on my old "engraved" bedroom set for years and when we moved and bought "real" furniture, I needed it again for the bumps, etc. that occurred in the moving plus on the new houses cabinets. My old Guardsman set was dried out -- one of the pens still worked a little but the set is around 25 to 30 years old now. It is amazing that I put in "Guardsman Furniture Touch-Ups" (oops) and furniture touch up yesterday on the website and NOTHING came up. I kept getting book titles, etc. All of a sudden today it comes up and other similar products, too where none existed before. WEIRD.

You start by marking with the lightest color pen (thank goodness they now use different color lids on each pen), and wipe the excess with a cloth, then try the next darker, etc. Works great and my old set always looked so much better after a treatment. You could never tell that I had touched it up.

The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is due to the fact that I ultimately decided upon 128mm cabinet hardware. These are European measurements that are fast becoming popular. The product accomodates all standard knobs/handles just not the larger sizes. I still used the product but had to modify it to fit my hardware. Just keep that in mind when purchasing the product. For the price, it's invaluable if you want your knobs to look uniform and professionally done.

Amish Furniture, A Piece Of America

Amish furniture offers us more than well-crafted objects on which to place our meals or our prized possessions. In these times, as many furniture manufacturing jobs have moved and continue to move overseas, the Amish remain true to their faith in both our country and a way of life that emphasizes excellence and attention to detail as well as self sufficiency.

Within the last several years, imports of home furniture made of wood climbed to over one-third of such furniture sold in the United States. China remains at the top of the US furniture imports list, providing over one-fourth of all imported home-use wooden furniture, as reported by Wood and Wood Products magazine. In just five short years, between 1996 and 2001, Chinese furniture imported into the US increased by over 275%. Each year, the American consumer is offered a wider range of furniture made outside of the United States, and with this comes a challenge for our own furniture manufacturers.

One reason for the expansion in furniture imports is related to foreign production costs. Just a few years ago, Duke University reported that many Chinese workers earn somewhere between $.70 and $.90 per hour. Chinese industry is also motivated by more than profit; as a Communist country, it actively seeks to create employment for its entire work force as well as attracting US dollars for its rapidly-growing population. Even with the inclusion of extensive shipping and handling costs, furniture can often be produced in China as much as 25-30% cheaper than in the US.

According to the news program Frontline, however, trade with China has not been good for everyone in the US. While it may be helpful to large multinational corporations, it has been tough on smaller and mid-sized American companies. It also continues to fuel a huge deficit between the two countries. One example is at the Port of Long Beach, which imports $36 billion in goods each year from China but exports only $3 billion. Overall, US imports from China exceed exports to China by least five to one, and the trend shows no signs of abating. Larry Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, has made the observation that gains from trade with China may have offset losses, but notes that three-fourths of America may be on the losing side. What has helped big business may not have been good for many who work and manufacture in the US.

Quality is another factor that always must be taken into account when thinking of buying an imported rather than a locally produced piece of furniture. Wood is known for having its own unique personality?it takes on its color, texture, and appearance from its growing areas as well as the climates where it is manufactured and ultimately calls its final home. Transitioning climates too quickly can result in lower quality finishes and distortions of size as well. Progress has been made in this area, through concerted effort by both overseas manufacturers and importers, but this is often at the expense of time. Delivery can be almost four times as slow as for American made furniture, and sometimes timetables are unpredictable, being at the mercy of foreign weather, political and economic upsets.

In the past, the only way to obtain quality Amish furniture was to travel to the Amish country, or to journey or call an Amish furniture distributor. This was not always easy, taking the time to shop to find exactly the piece wanted, as well as journeying to a showroom where the furniture could be seen. Luckily, technology has allowed us to obtain such traditional and beautifully crafted Amish furniture from our own living rooms, using the Internet to both view and order such pieces. However, even the ease of searching and ordering are not the most important things when acquiring Amish furniture.

I have been using this projector mount for about 6 months now and have had absolutely no problems with it. I got the mount because I had a beam directly in front of the desired mounting position. The extension allowed me to get the project just low enough to get the picture under the beam.

The mount is very solid and extremely adjustable, allowing you to get the perfect fit on your screen. This is the first projector mount I have used, but I can't imagine using any other. I am using it with a Mitsubishi HD1000U projector.

I found this mount when looking for an economy mount for my classroom at school. A strong and stable mount, it has not moved since we installed and aimed it. My one concern is that the product shipped without instructions, but our school engineer who had hung mounts before had no problem installing it. ZIf not tfor the lack of instructions, it would have easily gotten 5 stars!

The option to record in high quality makes a big difference. I have used this to record lectures and personal notes and have been very pleased with it. Dont worry the sound of the hard drive of the ipod is not that bad (after a while you hardly notice it) and again the quality is very high considering the price and comparing to other devices that record voice memos.

Pro's: the quality of the recording is very good. I bought it to record meetings and it does a good job at that.

Con's: Max hour and a quarter recording time. Unit did not save the recording before the battery went dead. Would not charge while recording, even though it was sync'd with computer. Also, without the unit attached to the iPod, there doesn't seem to navigate to the stored files to listen to them.

Belkin service turned out to great. I had bought this on ebay, had no receipt, they didn't care, authorized an exchange for a new one. I will followup this review to say whether it was the particular unit that was defective, or just a lousy design.

This toy was a great buy. My 4 year old loves to create the same face over and over and my 1 year old likes to stick any part in any hole. She argue over it often, I may have to get another potato! it comes with so many parts that two potatoes couls easily share all of the parts. Although the holes on one side are a little "loose" and the arm falls out all of the time, its a great laugh for us as he loses his parts all over the house. I agree the case isnt so sturdy, we keep that parts in a tupperware-type box.

This is a great Item because my 3 year old didn't like her booster seat anymore. She now can sit in her "big girl chair" and use the regular cushion that everyone else uses. It is easy to put on! Every once in a while, I come across a product that I think needs to be distinguished as truly brilliant. When I first saw the Kaboost, I thought it was the neatest product and the answer to my 2 1/2 year-old son not wanting to sit in a booster seat. I have to admit that once I placed the order I was a bit skeptical if Kaboost would really be easy to use, fit my chair and also be stable. But I have to say, that this product really does live up to its name. It snapped onto my chair in seconds and even stays attached when the chair is moved. Same as the case for a couple of other reviewers, this product was broken and banged up when it arrived because it was poorly packed. One later reviewer said their's was packaged quite well and perhaps Amazon had learned their lesson; well they hadn't. Although a full refund is promised, it'll still be a hassle to take to a shipping drop-off. It's hard to believe that a virtual business depending 100% on 3rd party shippers doesn't know how to pack merchandise, particularly a product with a history of shipping issues documented on it's own web site. I'll buy the replacement at Barnes and Noble where I can make sure the merchandise isn't damaged before I pick it up.

Customer Review: The real deal

I've tried the spiral CFL's and even the old incandescent tungsten bulbs. They don't compare. These daylight CFL's are the real deal. The 27 watt fully light your work area, they are pleasant with their full spectrum capabilities, and fairly inexpensive if you are looking for a well lit area light. I am more pleased than I expected. The quality of the light emitted is superb, you feel instant satisfaction.

This lives up to its name. This device has 3 soothing tunes of Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars, The Cradle Song and Rock-a-bye baby and 3 synthesized sounds of mom's heartbeat, the ocean and rain. It has a volume adjustable button and the sound is not tinny but of a great quality.

The projector system is very versatile. As long as you have a surface on which to project you can change the angle and the sharpness of the image to accommodate your little one's line of vision. This comes with three discs for projection. One with sheep,moon and stars, another with a jungle theme and another with an aquatic theme.

It also has a timer with 15 minute intervals up to 60 minutes so you can set the duration of the sounds and projection.

My Little one who was 2 weeks when first introduced to this device focused more on the sounds than the images but I guess when she is older she will be able to appreicate the projected images. It lulls her to sleep and soothes her when she is fussy.

It is also very well built in my opinion due to the fact that it has fallen several times on tiled surfaces and is still going strong. The only flaw I found with this device was the fact that you couldn't play the sounds in succession it just repeats the one selected.

This is a great device at a great price!

What more can I say about these stands?!?! I was skeptical since there was only one review, but I thought that I would take my chances since I liked the look and they are silver and match my speakers. They arrived (although the outer boxes were a bit bashed) very quickly from Amazon and the inner contents were not damaged. I ordered two pair since I needed four stands. They came with six different speaker attachments, curved and straight poles, and very clearly marked hardware. I've never seen hardware so well labeled and individually packaged by letter code and description that matched the instructions, which are also very thorough. The included hardware alone is worth half the cost of these stands. The stands themselves are VERY high quality. I can't imagine what one would pay at a local superstore for this quality - at least double. The bases are a powder-coated looking cast iron base, which is very heavy. It's doubtful that you could ever knock them over unintentionally. They come with carpet spikes and wood floor protectors. The poles are shiny (but not too shiny) and have nice looking tightening attachments in the middle. I am VERY picky about style and these are high style. Don't have any reservations in purchasing these stands. You won't be disappointed!

These stands are awesome, and are made with top-quality material. I use them at their upper-most position with satellite speakers that are only about 10 lbs. The only thing I notice is that with the stands fully extended, they tend to lose their vetical position slighty. This can be compensated for by placing a shim of wood or cardboard under the base of the stand. Other than that, I would recommend them to anyone. The price and quality cannot be beat, and believe me, I checked evereywhere!

Nice to have this album available cheaply, but the tags on the MP3s cause the files to show up under two different Artists. Some tracks are by Martin Mull, others (the spoken ones) are by Fabulous Furniture. The person who created these files apparently had some fun with that, but may be confusing or annoying when someone downloads the files and then tries to find them in a music library (like iTunes).

"The blues started in the delta region of Louisiana," Martin Mull teaches us on this all-time great album.

Now, bear in mind that this album largely sold on the word of mouth associated with the air play that "Dueling Tubas" got. I bought the CD because of that cut. But, in all truth, it's "Straight Talk About the Blues" that makes the album itself.

That, and "Licks off of Records" helps us all understand what popular music is all about.

But my real question is, who is the lady with the distinctive laugh in the audience to this performance, and in what way, exactly, is she related by blood or marriage to Martin Mull??

Customer Review: Nice Product- No Technical Support

In the 2 years or so that I have owned this product I have gotten much use and enjoyment from it. After playing around with it for a while I have learned to "hack" items to create furniture not included in the game. The software features many colors, textures, and layout options.

But not all is well. You are on your own if you should ever have any questions. This software is no longer technically supported. The image importer isn't much help except for putting photographs on the walls. The accessories selections are minimal,and any landscape ideas will have to be left to your imagination.

Overall, not a bad product though.

I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good this software turned out to be. It's easy to use, but still very functional for coming up with home interior designs. Although it is distributed by Activion, it is really based on the same software as the "Better Homes & Gardens Home Design" program.

Having the ablity to see a decorating idea on the computer does make a difference when designing your home. The software enabled me to adjust my designs based on the difference of what I thought something would look like in my minds eye, and how it will actually look in my home, via the 3D recreation. Best $20 I spent in a long time.

I have not gotten to the "Design Challenge" game part of the program. I've been having too much fun re-doing my own house.

When Is It Time to Buy New Furniture

When is it time to buy new furniture? Take a look around your house and ask yourself these questions:

1.Are your sofa or chair cushions showing signs of wear? If it's leather, maybe the seat cushions are discolored, lighter in the seat area than the rest of the sofa or chair. If it's fabric, see if the upholstery threads are pulling apart or discolored. If your furniture is showing signs of wearing, it's time to consider new furniture or at least slip covering options.

2.Are there holes in your furniture? You might be able to stitch or patch the holes if the rest of the piece is structurally sound. Otherwise, start thinking about new furniture.

3.When you rise from the seat, does the cushion remain sunken? Check the springs to see if that's the problem. If a broken or stretched spring is the culprit, the problem can probably be repaired, maybe even by yourself if you happen to be handy in that way. If the springs look okay, maybe you just need a new cushion. Take a cushion with you to an upholstery shop or fabric store to show the sales person what kind of cushion you need to replace the bad one. It's a good idea to take a good cushion with you so the sales person can help match the cushion to the firmness and density you want to replace the bad cushion with.

4.Is the frame of your furniture still in good shape? If a sofa or chair has been dropped, it might crack a wooden frame. Flip your furniture upside down and take a look.

5.Does your furniture sit level? If it's not level, check the frame. Check the legs to make sure a peg is not missing. If you can't spot the problem, it's time to buy new furniture.

6.When you sit on your furniture, do you feel the arms separate from the rest of the frame? Maybe you have a problem that can be solved with wood glue and a few clamps. Otherwise, for safety's sake, get rid of your old furniture.

7.When you sit down, do you feel wood or a frame sticking out? Consider that poke in the behind your official cue to buy new furniture!

8.If you know it's time to replace the old look of your furniture, decide if the update can be done with a simple slipcover. By measuring the furniture properly, a slip cover - either purchased ready made or custom made if your furniture has an unusual shape or curve to it - you can get a nice fit. Slip covers range in price starting at about $40. The better fabric you select, the higher the price. If you just want to update your furniture for a few more months until you save enough money to buy an all new ensemble, slip covers are the way to go.

9.Look at the finances. Will buying new furniture mean you'll have to finance the purchase? If so, can you handle the extra bill each month?

10.Do you just want to? There's nothing wrong with "wanting" new furniture. Look for solid pieces that will give your family many years of enjoyment and you'll always be happy with your decision to buy new furniture!

We ordered 2 of these for our sons for Christmas - we opened them up Christmas Eve and had them hooked up and ready to use in about 10min's.

Our boys use them for Xbox and watching dvds and love them. When they are playing games that have shooting or sports games they are very impressed with the extra effect of the speakers making them "feel" all the sound effects. Our play room is in the basement so the extra volume doesn't bother us - I wouldn't want this in my living room.

I bought one of these from best buy. It worked for the 15 minutes I was testing it out, then 20 minutes later, when I plugged it back in , it only made weird rumbling sounds, would not play like it did first time I tried it. Make sure you can return if you decide to chance buying one, cool idea though.

I purchased the Sanus VMAA18B (black) for a 46" Sony Bravia LCD. I picked the VMAA18B because it is not as bulky as other mounts (31 lbs), is easy to move/tilt and had a low profile when collapsed.

Another review recommended against this mount with a Sony 46", but I decided to purchase after trading emails with Sanus technical support (very helpful), who recommended I purchase 2 M6 metric bolts (6 x 20mm) since 2 of the included M6 bolts (6 x 35mm) used to mount brackets on the back of the Sony Bravia were too long.

I mounted directly on brick - had to purchase anchors (Red Head 3/8 dia x 3" hex sleeve anchor) since lag bolts included with the mount are only recommended for wooded studs. Installation took ~4 hours, mainly due to time to measure best location & drill the 8 holes (4 top, 4 bottom) into solid brick. Some of the instructions weren't clear, but eventually figured out what to do.

Sanus technical support was great. I received prompt & informative answers to all of my questions -- was even recommended to get advice from a local contruction professional due to variable nature of brick.

Overall, the mount looks great, is a great full motion mount for the price.

I own a PANASONIC TH50PZ750U and the SANUS VMAA18 works amazing with this tv. It was very simple to install, less than an hour with 2 people. Here are some helpful hints to mount the 750U. The Panasonic screen is compatible with the VMAA18 in that the mounting pattern on the back and the weight of the screen are within the specifications for the mount. I believe what many heard could be related to the length of the bolts needed for installation. They include four diameters of bolts, each in two lengths, for attaching the screen to the mount. The Panasonic mounting holes accept the largest diameter, or Metric 8mm diameter bolt. This means that even the longest length of M8 bolt that they send, which is 40mm, doesn't sufficiently engage. In that case, an M8 bolt in a 60mm length is required. Metric 8mm diameter bolts come in two thread pitches. You want a coarse pitch of 1.25. The best places to find these are smaller hardware stores or automotive parts stores. I picked up some up for about a dollar.

One other consideration for this screen would be the large bulge on the bottom. The screen is mounted using two vertical monitor brackets. To ensure proper fit, you may need to position these brackets (which have slots along the full length for flexible mounting) as far up on the back of the screen as possible. You may also need to use the included spacers between the monitor brackets and the back of screen as well.

This is a fantastic mount, and provides the sleekest appearance of any full motion mount out there and yet still has full functionality.

The only thing I wish came with this table was something that mentions the weight limit for the bench style seats.

An older child sat in the middle of the seat and it is now permanantly curved(bent).

Other than having some kind of weight restriction information, I find this table very useful and benefitial to my childs playing outside.

This product is an exact replacement for the Blum 110 hinge that has a plastic spring insert. I have over 100 of those hinges, about 40% of which have broken over the past 10 years. This product has a metal spring. It works smoothly and has the same feel as the other model. It fits the same mounting holes. It has an excellent alignment adjustment mechanism that the other model did not. Replacing the broken hinges was easy, and once installed, adjusting up/down and in/out could be done with all the mounting screws tightened, using the two cam-screws on each hinge. I realize that if you're reading the reviews you're probably just wondering if the game is educational and/or entertaining. But here's a couple of things you should think about before purchasing. Like other reviewers have said, it would be nice if there were a power switch somewhere on the game. As it is, the big red button that you hit to turn the quacking & movement on/off is VERY sensitive - I can't put the box back up on the shelf without the game turning on. And forget trying to stack another game on top of this one! Again, the quacking starts up! And children can't put the game away themselves because you have to get 3 ducks in each corner with the main piece in the center just right in the too-small box! Because the game itself isn't anything spectacular, parents should definitely consider this type of thing before buying the game.

This toy is great in reference to the educational aspects of the game. It allows a parent or older sibling to teach colors and shapes while also incorporating the social skills of sharing and being happy for someone else when they win.

That being said it is a terribly noisy game, both mechanically noisy as well as the continuous qucking that takes place while it is running. There is no shut off button or volume control and it is a tough little bugger to get re-packaged in the box once it has been taken out. I expect my kids to help put a game away when they are done using it but this one requires my efforts solely. Once you get it back in the box you have to becareful not to bump the top or set anything on the top of the box or you set off the quacking while it is in the box.

Great learning toy but can get on a parents nerves if played with for a long period of time.

Overall I gave it a three because of the re-packaging hassles and the lack of on/off button or volume control.

13 ways to save your furniture from cat scratching

The cats are great pets. They love to play, they love to cuddle when you are watching TV or sleeping, and they purr for no reason other than being near you. But they also love to scratch. Unfortunately, the things they love to scratch are often the legs of your antique table, your upholstered sofa, or your expensive carpet.

Although many humans do not appreciate when their cats scratching, you have to know that kittens and cats do not scratch to make us angry, they just need to scratch. Scratching is a natural hardwired behavior in cats, just like breathing and purring, and every cat owner must know WHY THE CATS SCRATCH.

In the wild, cats scratch around their immediate environment to signal their presence to other cats and to claim the area in question. The marking takes two forms: visual and olfactory. The visual is in the form of clawing marks and is so obvious that even we humans can recognise it. The olfactory mark is subtler, involving the release of pheromones. These are substances secreted from the body to be picked up by the number of the same species, causing them to alter their behavior.

Scratching has additional function too. It removes the nail sheaths, outer layer of dead cells from the claw. You might thing your cat scratches to sharpen her claws, but it more likely it provides her with a form of physical therapy for the muscles and tendons of her paws.

There are two groups of target for every cat. The first one is when your cat target one or two areas in the home, usually near important territorial areas such as: sleeping area, litter tray, hunting or play areas. The second one is your cat undertake more widespread and destructive scratching in highly visible sites such as: doorways, windows, prominent furnishings - like sofas.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOUR CAT SCRATCHING YOUR FURNITURE?

1. The easiest but the most painful method for cat is declawing. Faced with cat scratching problems, many people consider declawing surgery. But many veterinarians believe declawing is a painful and unnecessary surgery and refuse to do it for humane reasons. Instead, they advocate training your cat to use a scratching post.

2. Make sure there are multiple scratching opportunities. Cats often like to scratch after eating and sleeping, so be sure there is something to scratch near where they eat and sleep. A scratching post is an excellent investment for your cat. It will allow her to scratch, stretch and exercise all at once. If you want to provide your cat not only with scratching surface, but and places where she can climb, perch and sleep you should consider cat tree.

3. Cover the furniture with something your cat does not like: double sided tape, some plastic or aluminium foil. Some cats dislike the feeling and sound of foil, and most cats hate things that stick to their fur. Double-sided sticky tape used in carpet installation works well, but be sure the tape wont harm your cat or furniture.

4. Keep your cat mentally stimulated and offers her plenty of opportunity for exercise, and she will has less opportunity to be destructive in your home. If your cat is frustrated and bored, she may scratch your furniture or tear your drapes. Give her enough play time. Cats are motivated by smell, sound, texture and movement. The toys you use should aim to cover all these aspects. Discover your cats preferences by presenting a variety different sized toy made from different materials and watch her reaction to gauge her preferences.

5. Cutting the nails regularly may help keep a cat from scratching the furniture, or at least reduce the damage done by its scratching. Get your kitten used to having its nails clipped while it is young, praise her while you clip the nail and reward her with a treat.

6. Booby trap the furniture with a soda can with some pennies in it, so that if cat scratches, it makes a noise.

7. Use a doorknob alarm on your curtains. When pinned to the drapes, the alarm will sound every time your cat tries to use curtains as a ladder.

8. Consider a window perch for your feline friend. It will give your cat hours of entertainment - especially if you place a bird or squirrel feeder in the garden outside the window. Be sure the window is closed so your pet wont fall out.

9. When you catch your cat scratching furniture, try squirting her with a water pistol or squirt bottle and use a firm no. Of course, this wont stop your cat when you are not around.

10. If your cat is gaining access to a high bookcase by leaping from a nearby chair, move the chair. Without her launchpad, your cat will no longer be able to reach her perch.

11. You can also try taping inflated balloons to the problem areas. When your cat pops one with her claws, she will avoid scratching there again. However, try this only when you are at home, so you can pick up the balloon pieces before your cat tries to eat them.

12. There are training devices that keep cats off forbidden areas by making annoying sounds. They are available at pet supply stores, catalogs and websites.

13. If your cat still scratches in appropriate places, use some sprays like bitter apple or actual orange peels, which are good deterrents.

All forms of physical punishment should be avoided since they can cause fear or aggression toward the owner, and at best, the cat will only learn to stop the scratching while the owner is around.

It does not matter which method you will choose to prevent your furniture destroying, every cat owner mush know that it is impractical and unfair to expect cats to stop scratching entirely.

Whatever your individual style or taste, it is important to know how to identify each style. If your best friend brags about the To-die-for Louis XV side chair, dah-ling, would you know what the heck she was talking about? Well, here is a primer on furniture types that will help you appear to be an expert whatever your neighbor buys next!

1. English Traditional

William and Mary A simple and comfortable style with lots of upholstery, arched cabinetry and turned legs. Elaborately carved walnut was the wood of choice

Queen Anne This style is hallmarked by graceful and lovely S-shaped cabriole legs. This style usually has limited ornamentation, but what is there is elegant such as the scalloped shell motif.

Chippendale Influenced by the Chinese, this style includes a ball and claw foot and richly carved legs.

Victorian Overstuffed chairs and elaborate and ornate woods are elements of this style. Dark woods and elegant fabrics are also indicators of this style.

2. French Traditional

Louis XIV Very ornate and massive furniture is the hallmark of this style. But while the pieces are enormous, their lines are straight and often rectangular.

Louis XV This style features smaller scaled furniture, although it continues to be extravagant and ornate. Curves appear instead of the straight lines of Louis XIV. This style inspired a much-used fad of the 50s and 60s called French Provincial (remember white furniture with gilt trim?).

Louis XVI This style is more subdued or subtle that earlier French styles, It has classic, almost Grecian lines that lack decoration and carving.

Empire This style inspired other designs around the world such as Duncan Phyfe, Sheraton and Biedermeier. The furniture was massive, but symmetrical, with gentlly bowed fronts or legs.

3. American Traditional

American Traditional was influenced by English and French styles and eventually evolved into a uniquely American style.

Contemporary Modern With its roots traced to the Bauhaus school of art in Germany, this style was simple, clean and geometric. The hallmark of this style is the idea that form follows function.

Country This casual style is and expression of our American social, ethnic and religious culture. It includes styles such as the clean and simple lines of Shaker furniture, the massive simplicity of Mission, and similar styles from artisans in the Southwest and all corners of the country.

These are the traditional styles on which most dcor is based, but I know of at least two others that I have used extensively in the past Early Thrift Shop or Late Graduate Student. Those styles feature eclectic furniture and fabric choices and a budget of, say...ten bucks! Just love those cinder block bookcases, dont you?

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

Real wood furniture is the most popular furniture in existence. It's been around for hundreds of years and probably existed when the cave people got tired of squatting on the dirt floor of their caves and looked around for a better way.

The woods that are fashioned into furniture fall into three categories:

1. Hardwoods

2. Softwoods

3. Composites

Even the term 'hardwood' or 'softwood' is deceptive. Hardwoods aren't necessarily harder, denser material. For example, balsa wood is one of the lightest, least dense woods there is, and it's considered a hardwood. Technically, lumber is classified based on how the tree reproduces. As a general rule, though, softwood trees are evergreen year round while the hardwoods create the gorgeous autumn foliage that we all love so much.

Hardwoods are considered the highest quality and are the most expensive. Their natural colors vary from the darkest woods to the lightest ones and and they can be stained or painted for even more variety. Hardwood furniture is least likely to warp or bend and is prized in all high quality homes. The five woods most commonly used in furniture production are cherry, walnut, oak, maple and mahogany.

Softwoods are less expensive than hardwoods, but they require extra care. Because they are less durable, it's much easier to scratch or dent softwood furniture. In addition, they often don't have the beautiful grains of a hardwood, and therefore don't stain as beautifully.

Pine is an example of a softwood that is commonly used for furniture. These woods are often used in construction as well so the choicest pieces are reserved for furniture. In construction, knots and splits are common. Lots of construction lumber will not accept paint and this kind of wood is used for shelves or packing crates.

The softwood used in furniture is designated as "Appearance" lumber and includes most softwood lumber that has been custom milled to a pattern or otherwise surfaced on all four sides.

Composites are the cheapest form of wood and are literally manufactured, rather than grown.

1. Plywood: multiple layers of thin wooden sheets are glued together and pressed. Plywood is strong and resists swelling, shrinking and warping. There is some furniture made directly from plywood, but generally it is only used as a support when incorporated into furniture.

2. Particle board: sawdust and small wood chips are mixed with glue or resin which is then shaped and pressure treated. When used for inexpensive furniture, particle board is usually covered with laminate or veneer. This is necessary because particle board splits easily and the laminate prevents splitting. However, the downside is that the laminate may separate from the wood because the particle board responds to temperature and pressure changes by swelling and shrinking.

3. Hardboard: is made like particle board but it's placed under higher pressure so it's stronger.

4. MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard: wood particles are bonded with resin and compressed. It is harder than particle board or hardboard, and can be cut like plywood although it isn't as strong as plywood. Some MDF is covered with melamine which is a durable plastic in a variety of colors. The exposed edges of MDF are rough and need covering with molding or some other decorative material.

Technically, furniture made from all of these wood products is "real" wood furniture, even the composites. Prices and quality range from the hardwoods down to the composites. The higher you go up the spectrum, the more you can expect to pay for your wood furniture. I bought this book to learn about dining table construction.

The instructions are clear and concise and includes ALL the steps required to make 9 tables.

Kim Carleton Graves is obviously a very good teacher and it really comes across in this book.

I found this book a great learning aid and I'm sure I will refer to it time and time again.

Please publish a book on chairs.

Customer Review: Just what you need if your going to build a dining table

Dining room tables are different in complexity than smaller tables, so its apropos that Taunton chose to put these tables in a separate book from their Tables book. I have both, and have built projects out of both. The Dining Table book deals has a nice layout and design section in the beginning where it describes the minimum and ideal dimensions for tables built for certain numbers of people.

The book contains a nice selections of projects, including a trestle table (pictured on the front cover), a shaker style kitchen table (which I built), various expandable tables, and a boat table constructed using a torsion box.

I would also recommend reading the Tables book by Taunton, as it has a dining room table designed by Frank Klausz which is awesome.
